Strange Bird, Dear Friend

you're a strange bird with a young face
old eyes and the habit of being you
it doesn't quite make sense
and it feels so wrong
to be the fascinated one
you've not enough years behind you
not enough paths beneath your feet
not enough moments to fill you
you're just a strange bird
with a young face
and eyes i'd like to drown in
who knew bottle glass could shine like that
oh i'd love to be bad
but i can't step over
that's a cliff i won't jump off
you're just a small thing
older than your years
wiser than your days
taller than your age
and it's so strange to look at you
you're a bird with a young face
with a soaring voice and scarred days
but you've not enough years behind you
not enough paths beneath your feet
not enough moments to fill you
just eyes i'd like to drown in
and a precipice in your palm
and i'm fascinated,
trying not to fall
what are you going to do,
with your old eyes and habit of being you?
what are you going to do
with all the music in your soul
and the paths beneath your feet
oh i'd love to be bad
but the precipice in your palm
is a cliff i can't step off of
no matter your feathers
you're just a strange bird with a young face
and a habit of being you
and who knew
that eyes of bottle glass could shine like stars
